GOP candidate Trump calls off rally due to security concerns

CHICAGO (AP) — Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump canceled one of his signature rallies on Friday, calling off the event in Chicago due to safety concerns after protesters packed into the arena where it was to take place.

The announcement that the billionaire businessman would postpone the rally until another day led a large portion of the crowd inside the University of Illinois at Chicago Pavilion to break out into raucous cheers. Meanwhile, supporters of the candidate started chanting "We want Trump! We want Trump!"

There were isolated physical confrontations between some members of the crowd after the event was canceled.

There was no sign of Trump inside the arena on the college campus, where dozens of UIC faculty and staff had petitioned university administrators to cancel the rally. They cited concerns it would create a "hostile and physically dangerous environment" for students.

Before the announcement the event wouldn't take place, a handful of intense verbal clashes took place between Trump supporters and protesters as the crowd waited for his arrival. For the first time during his White House bid, the crowd appeared to be an equal mix of those eager to cheer on the real estate mogul and those overtly opposed to his candidacy.

When one African-American protester was escorted out before the event started, the crowd erupted into chants of "Let them stay!"

Veronica Kowalkowsky, an 18-year-old Trump supporter, said before the event started that she had no ill will toward the protesters — but didn't think they felt the same way.

"I feel a lot of hate," she said. "I haven't said anything bad to anyone."

Hours before the event was scheduled to start, hundreds of people lined up outside the arena at the University of Illinois at Chicago — a civil and immigrant rights organizing hub with large minority student populations. Trump backers were separated from an equally large crowd of anti-Trump protesters by a heavy police presence and barricades.

Trump Pulls Out Of Chicago Rally, Amid Massive Protests

(CBS) — The Donald Trump rally at the UIC Pavilion was abruptly “postponed” Friday evening, amid security concerns, as protesters massed outside the University of Illinois-Chicago campus venue.

The announcement came around 6:30 p.m., after thousands of Trump supporters filed into the hall at Racine and Harrison, in anticipation of a speech by the controversial Republican presidential candidate. Protesters had marched across the University of Illinois-Chicago campus toward the site of the campaign rally.

It was not immediately clear what the postponement means, or whether the Trump event was for all intents and purposes cancelled. Safety was cited as a concern, however.

“Mr. Trump just arrived in Chicago and after meeting with law enforcement has determined that for the safety of all of the tens of thousands of people that have gathered in and around the arena, tonight’s rally will be postponed to another date,” the Trump campaign said in a statement posted online.

“Thank you very much for your attendance and please go in peace.”

Things were not exactly peaceful outside, as throngs of anti-Trump demonstrators ringed the UIC Pavilion. A Chicago police officer was seen bleeding from the head, but it wasn’t immediately clear what had happened.

I am watching the Sean Hannity Town Halls with the candidates. Trump was on and his interview was almost 100% on his policies.

Cruz is on and he's now suggesting we vote for him because all the polls say if Trump were to get the nomination it'd be an R disaster in the Fall when he runs against Hillary. Cruz says all the polls show him beating Hillary. I find this logic very weak. We don't vote based on polls do we? And on top of that, I don't believe the polls. Trump has defied all pundits so far and most likely will continue to do so.

Another one of Cruz's lines is, he's the only candidate left who can beat Donald Trump. Vote for me because I am not Donald Trump??? What kind of rationale is that?

Both of his early reasons to vote for him fall short for me. I don't put any stock in the polls. Polls are lazy and look at one small cross-section.

And then, isn't the stop Trump idea straight from the establishment sector of the R party? The front runner means Trump has the most votes!! the people have made him #1!!! So Cruz has reduced part of his appeal to using the Democrat and establishment R's talking points! Ironically these are the people Cruz supposedly hates and has been running against in the Senate. So I'm not that impressed with him at all!!!, not nearly enough to change my vote to his direction.

Another anti-Trump reason has come up. Cruz is impugning Trump's character, demanding that he release the tape from a NYT 'off the record' interview.

This is also slimy Ted Cruz at work. Trump has every right to refuse to release that interview. But Cruz maintains he has insider information and he states what that NYT tape of the interview reportedly says, that Trump won't build the wall on the border of Mexico, that he's just saying he will.
He's challenging Trump to release it to prove it's not true. He proceeds to attack Trump based on the straw man he he just created. It's an intellectually dishonest position. 'Off the record' should mean just that. The NYT has played by a different set of rules for Trump. Content from off the record interviews is not supposed to be leaked. For Cruz to demand the release of the tape violates a journalistic oath. The NYT has already broken that oath by suggesting its contents.
