By mid April, the Teller County town of Divide will have a new mayor.

Walter the cat’s tenure will end April 8 when the votes, and donations, are tallied. This year’s election is the third since the Teller County Regional Animal Shelter began having a fundraiser in 2010 to have some fun and raise money for the organization. A new Mayor of Divide is chosen every two years to coincide with the mayoral election in nearby Woodland Park.

The 2014 field of candidates includes a cat, a donkey, a mustang, a wolf, a hedgehog and six dogs.

A recent press release announcing the 2014 election said all candidates “promise to do absolutely nothing, but that doesn’t mean that these candidates aren’t serious about their candidacy.”

“Voting” begins Saturday online at tcrascolorado.com and runs through 7 p.m. on April 8. There are also physical voting locations around Teller County. Each vote costs one dollar and goes to support TCRAS. The organizations says voters can vote multiple times and for as many different candidates as they want.

“This election is all about the animals!” the press release said.
