This is getting ridiculous.

When this is all over, if it's ever over, will be look back and say how we need to be better protected in the future; or will we realize how easily the masses can be panicked and then controlled?

The masses have always been easily panicked, then controlled. See for example Weimar Germany in the late 20's, early 30's, Maoist China during the Great Cultural Revolution, the Bolshevik takeover of Russia. When people panic, they move to extremes politically.

I suspect part of the ease of control is the result of human nature, and part if the result of how people are educated or perhaps mal-educated - to make decisions based upon reasoning or feelings or to unquestioningly obey 'authority'.
