The Democrat candidates keep on trying to top one another in their efforts to pander to different interest groups.
ZitatSen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., reintroduced a bill on the campaign trail this week, which could mean $57 million in tax refunds for married LGBT couples.
The Refund Equality Act, which was originally introduced in 2017, would allow LGBT couples who were married prior to the 2013 Supreme Court strike-down of the Defense of Marriage Act in U.S. v. Windsor to amend tax returns from the time that they were married. Prior to 2013, 10 states had legalized same-sex marriage, but were required to file their federal taxes as individuals.
Following the 2013 Supreme Court's decision, married same sex couples from those 10 states were permitted to change their previous tax returns from individual to joint, which entitled them to some federal tax relief. However, the tax return amendments were only permitted for the previous three years. The Refund Equality Act would remove those time limits. Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., reintroduced a bill on the campaign trail this week, which could mean $57 million in tax refunds for married LGBT couples.
Bernie, meanwhile, is working a different street corner.
ZitatSen. Bernie Sanders is set to stake out uncharted territory in the Democratic presidential primary, offering up a plan to completely eliminate the student loan debt of every American.
On Monday, Sanders will submit legislation that cancels $1.6 trillion of student loan undergraduate and graduate debt for approximately 45 million people. His ambitious plan has no eligibility limitations and would be paid for with a new tax on Wall Street speculation.
The proposal goes further than the plan already unveiled by his Democratic primary rival Sen. Elizabeth Warren. Warren's debt relief package was subject to income eligibility levels to determine how much relief the average person would receive -- parameters that Warren said were aimed at closing the racial wealth gap. Under the Sanders plan, if you have student debt of any kind it would be canceled the second the legislation is signed into law.
ZitatDemocratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders will propose canceling the nation’s outstanding $1.6 trillion of student debt and offsetting the cost with a tax on Wall Street transactions.
The Vermont senator will propose legislation Monday that would provide debt relief to 45 million Americans who owe college student loan debts, according to a fact sheet provided by his Senate office. The plan would include a 0.5% tax on stock transactions, a 0.1% tax on bond trades and a .005% tax on derivatives transactions.
The proposal, which comes ahead of this week’s Democratic debates, would also provide states $48 billion annually to eliminate undergraduate tuition and fees at public colleges and universities, a long-standing Sanders campaign promise. Democratic House lawmakers including Representatives Ilhan Omar of Minnesota and Pramila Jayapal of Washington -- both members of the Democratic Party’s progressive wing -- will introduce the legislation to their own chamber Monday.
We here in WA are currently battling with out Democrat dominated legislature which, in the dead of night and without public discussion, imposed on us a series of new or enhanced taxes that will cost us taxpayers $27 billion over the next 10 years. We (yes, I am a part of this, radical that I am) are currently soliciting people to sign petitions which will "sunset" the new taxes after 1 year, and require the measures be submitted to public approval if they are renewed by the legislature. I will keep you apprised.
How can the Democrats say they support border security when they also advocate for sanctuary cities?
