ZitatWASHINGTON – They say the only two things that are certain in life are death and taxes. President Barack Obama wants to add one more: voting.
Obama floated the idea of mandatory voting in the U.S. while speaking to a civic group in Cleveland on Wednesday. Asked about the influence of money in U.S. elections, Obama digressed into the topic of voting rights and said the U.S. should be making it easier for people to vote.
ZitatAt least two dozen countries have some form of compulsory voting, including Belgium, Brazil and Argentina. In many systems, absconders must provide a valid excuse or face a fine, although a few countries have laws on the books that allow for potential imprisonment.
You know I'm all in favor of every CITIZEN voting (emphasis on the word citizen as opposed to illegal). But with that said, I have no trouble imagining our Thug POTUS turning into another Hugo Chavez or Saddam Hussein by not only imprisoning those who don't vote, but you vote HIS way or else along with the mandatory voting laws. I wouldn't put it past him.

As Stalin said, it's not who votes, it's who counts the votes.

With the current lack of integrity in our voting system, there is no need to mandate voting.
Exactly. This is why I am suspicious. There is something nefarious behind this scheme.
I suspect it is a nasty way to demoralize those who disagree with the PTB; force them to vote for the enemy or face consequences such as loss of employment, jail, loss of life, sanctions against their family and friends.
I actually saw this yesterday, decided not to add it, but now this discussion impels me to do so. OR, recall, is a deeply blue state.
First step?:
"SALEM, Ore. — Seventeen years after Oregon decided to become the first state to hold all elections with mail-in ballots, it took another pioneering step Monday to broaden participation by automatically registering people to vote.
Gov. Kate Brown signed a bill that puts the burden of registration on the state instead of voters.
Every adult citizen in Oregon who has interacted with the Driver and Motor Vehicle Services Division since 2013 but hasn't registered to vote will receive a ballot in the mail at least 20 days before the next statewide election. The measure is expected to add about 300,000 voters to the rolls.
"It just changes expectations for who's responsible for making elections work," said Barry Burden, a professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin and director of the Elections Research Center. "In every other state it's the responsibility for the voters to make sure it happens."
