Melania Trump Welcomes a Young American Patriot First lady extends warm welcome to a child who has gone out of his way to honor the sacrifice and lives of our fallen veterans by Maureen Mackey Updated 31 Jan 2018 at 9:45 AM
The first lady of the United States, wearing a gorgeous white pantsuit, was given a roaring welcome as she entered the chamber of the House of Representatives on Tuesday night, just ahead of President Donald Trump’s State of the Union address.
Several hours before the event, Mrs. Trump had tweeted to her followers, “I will be joined tonight by an honorable group of Americans. Sitting with me are heroes who have served our nation in times of need, families who have suffered at the hands of evil, and citizens who have embraced the American dream.”
She rode to the venue, by the way, “with her guests. This was a nice gesture to make them feel more welcome and comfortable,” noted Andrew Och, author of “Unusual for Their Time: On the Road with America’s First Ladies.” “Some people have already jumped to the conclusion that this means she didn’t want to ride with her husband, but I challenge that — she was being a good hostess to her guests.”
“We all share the same home, the same heart, the same destiny, and the same great American flag,” said the president at one point during his first formal address to the Congress and the nation since he took office as the 45th chief executive.
During his address, the president referenced the importance of family and faith, along with the motto "In God we trust."
He referenced the hard work and dedication of our extraordinary veterans.
And he referenced young Preston Sharp, a boy who, of his own initiative, has "now placed 40,000 flags at the graves of our [fallen] heroes ... Preston, a job well done," said the president, at which point Melania Trump — sitting and standing right beside the boy — gave him a beaming smile and put her arm around him.
It was a sweet moment — and aren't we still permitted to say that in America, no matter how much controversy, chaos and challenge we face on so many fronts?
It was human, real, and lovely.
She also extended a warm embrace to a young American couple also sitting near her — who stood to applause with their baby girl. Here's what President Trump said Tuesday night about the Holets family of New Mexico:
ZitatRyan Holets is 27 years old, and an officer with the Albuquerque Police Department. He is here tonight with his wife, Rebecca.
Last year, Ryan was on duty when he saw a pregnant, homeless woman preparing to inject heroin. When Ryan told her she was going to harm her unborn child, she began to weep. She told him she did not know where to turn but badly wanted a safe home for her baby.
In that moment, Ryan said he felt God speak to him: "You will do it — because you can." He took out a picture of his wife and their four kids. Then, he went home to tell his wife, Rebecca. In an instant, she agreed to adopt. The Holets named their new daughter Hope. Ryan and Rebecca: You embody the goodness of our Nation. Thank you, and congratulations
.
And by the way, "it should be pointed out that the president and Mrs. Trump rode home together after the speech," noted Andrew Och, as reported by Stephanie Grisham, the first lady's communication director.
Those were great human stories, but I did have one complaint. I was very disappointed that at the end of his story young Preston didn't take advantage of the situation and lean onto Melania's bosom (for comfort). You're not going to get a chance like that again, kid, and the fact you didn't makes me wonder what the young men of America are coming to.
