Seriously? I am of Irish descent and am not offended, so where does this guy get the right to speak for me or anyone else? Did he hold an election on the matter which I missed? OTOH, since the days of Theodore Hesburgh Notre Dame has lost its Catholic identity more and more, a process only accelerated under John "Pontius Pilate" Jenkins, so I assume we can expect apologies and self-criticism flowing from there soon.
ZitatESPN’s Max Kellerman argued that the “Fighting Irish” mascot of Notre Dame’s sports teams should be changed as it is offensive to Irish-Americans.
Kellerman, during a panel on the Cleveland Indians changing their “Chief Wahoo” logo, argued that some Irish-Americans are offended by the Fighting Irish mascot.
“Many Irish-Americans are not offended, but many are. And should that also change? The answer is yes, unequivocally yes.”
He also said, “Pernicious, negative stereotypes of marginalized people that offend even some among them should be changed. It’s not that hard.”
The public debate over sports teams named after ethnicities has a long history. Washington D.C.’s football team, the “Washington Redskins,” has long been a point of contention, as many people see the name and logo as offensive to Native Americans.
However, some polls have shown that Native Americans are overwhelmingly not offended by the name.
