The White House is again threatening a veto if Congress passes legislation which thwarts President Barack Obama’s goal of closing the detention facility at Guantanamo Bay.
“If this year’s Defense Authorization bill continues unwarranted restrictions regarding Guantanamo detainees, the President will veto the bill,” White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said in a statement Wednesday evening.
The threat came in an unusual context: as part of a statement issued in support of an amendment Rep. Adam Smith (D-Wash.) is offering to the National Defense Authorization Act that would repeal existing limits on transferring prisoners out of Guantanamo.
