A seriously injured Manatee County accident victim failed to receive help after a 911 call, but police later wrote her a citation in her hospital bed. Kathleen Iacovelli says she will think twice before ever calling 911 again.
Iacovelli, a nurse, and her husband Sam told Media Trackers Florida she was driving home from work earlier this month on State Road 64 in rural Manatee County. It was about 8:30 p.m., rain was falling and darkness had set in. An oncoming car swerved into the nurse’s lane. To avoid a head-on collision, Iacovelli had to swerve her car onto the shoulder of the highway. There, her car hydroplaned off the road, where it crashed into a tree and landed in a ditch. The oncoming car never stopped.
The nurse was trapped in her car, bleeding profusely and in great pain. A passing motorist came upon the scene and stopped to offer assistance. The motorist called 911 and the nurse’s husband. The 911 operator said help was on the way.
Approximately a half hour later, Sam Iacovelli arrived at the accident scene. Kathleen Iacovelli was still trapped in her car, bleeding and in great pain. Neither the police nor the paramedics had arrived yet. Another half hour passed with Kathleen still trapped in her car and in great pain. Finally, Sam gave up on the 911 call. He and the Good Samaritan motorist descended into the ditch, ripped away some thick bushes that pinned the car door shut against the wall of the ditch, and finally managed to wedge the car door open a little so they could pull Kathleen out from the car. Sam then drove his wife to a hospital for treatment.
