It's called virtue signaling, doing or saying something which demonstrates your moral superiority, and, in this case at least, at little cost to yourself.

My guess is that all this is based on the apocryphal story from WWII that the King of Denmark donned a Star of David in order to show his solidarity with Danish Jews when the Nazis demanded all Jews wear an arm band displaying the Star. Neither event really happened, including Jews being required to wear the arm band, but it made for excellent propaganda.
