I am not taking a position on Trump one way or the other. Instead this article from "Psychology Today" raises for me two interesting points, one contemporary, one historical.
Contemporary: where are articles like this when it comes to Obama? If anyone displays all the signs of Narcissistic Personality Disorder, it's his nibs. Has "Psychology Today" ever explored that avenue of analysis? Sorry, PT, but your political prejudices are showing and make whatever you have to say extremely dubious.
Historical: Even the author of this hit piece recognizes how this same kind of smear was done in the past.
ZitatHowever, his continued popularity has some concerned prominent clinicians ignoring the "Goldwater rule," which declares it unethical for psychiatrists to comment on an individual’s mental state without examining him personally and having the patient’s consent to make such comments.
For those who do know what the "Goldwater rule" is, it is based on an incident which occurred in the 1964 Presidential election between Goldwater and Johnson. A rag called "Fact" polled, or claimed to poll, about 1,200 health care professionals as to Goldwater's psychological fitness to be President. Of course, the survey found him to be as nutty as a fruitcake, but the problem was that none of the respondents had ever counseled Goldwater or even met him. As a result the American Psychiatric Association was forced to issue what is now called the Goldwater Rule which forbids psychiatrists from commenting on individuals' mental state without examining them personally and being authorized by the person to make such comments.
It would appear PT couldn't care less about any such rule because their political agenda, oops, I meant their concern for the country should Trump become President, outweighs any silly rule, or even any sense of decency.
As to Goldwater:
ZitatGoldwater sued the magazine, the publisher and the managing editor and in 1968 was awarded $75,000 in punitive damages and $1 in compensatory damages. The magazine appealed but lost before the U.S. Court of Appeals and the Supreme Court.
Yes, he won, but the smear was already out there and widely reported.
For the short term anyway, things will change thanks to Donald
The PC movement has ushered in this aristocratic mindset akin to the 30's when the 3 Stooges were in their heyday.
