A freak accident involving a young man, who always wanted to make people happy, and a firework cost him his life on Independence Day.

A Fourth of July celebration resulted in the death of 22-year-old Devon Staples who authorities said set a fireworks mortar tube off his head.

His brother Cody Staples, 25, told the Daily News he was standing five feet away from Devon in a backyard in Calais, Maine. He said his brother was holding a lighter and it accidentally caused the firework to go off.

“I was the first one who got there. There was no rushing him to the hospital. There was no Devon left when I got there,” his brother said. “It was a freak accident … But Devon was not the kind of person who would do something stupid. He was the kind of person who would pretend to do something stupid to make people laugh.”

Devon Staples lived in Orlando where he used to work at Disney World. He would dress up as various characters and talked to the little kids.

My guess is his last words were: "Hey Cody, watch this!" TM

Mrs TM wanted to tell me about this fireworks accident this morning. She didn't know I'd already read about it. "He put the fireworks on his head, lit them and died instantly. You never hear about girls doing this kind of thing."
"What are you saying?" TM asked.

"Boys are stupid. They have a stupid spot in their brain."

Jeesh a little harsh there from my special lady....

I guess doing something stupid and pretending to do something stupid sometimes meet in the middle.
