Walter E. Williams Column: There Are Irreconciliable Differences Between Liberty-Loving Americans and Leftists

Here's a question that I've asked in the past that needs to be revisited. Unless one wishes to obfuscate, it has a simple yes or no answer. If one group of people prefers strong government control and management of people's lives while another group prefers liberty and desires to be left alone, should they be required to enter into conflict with one another and risk bloodshed and loss of life in order to impose their preferences on the other group? Yes or no. My answer is no; they should be able to peaceably part company and go their separate ways.
The problem our nation faces is very much like a marriage in which one partner has an established pattern of ignoring and breaking the marital vows. Moreover, the offending partner has no intention to mend his ways. Of course, the marriage can remain intact while one party tries to impose his will on the other and engages in the deviousness of one-upsmanship and retaliation. Rather than domination or submission by one party, or domestic violence, a more peaceable alternative is separation.
I believe our nation is at a point where there are enough irreconcilable differences between those Americans who want to control other Americans and those Americans who want to be left alone that separation is the only peaceable alternative. Just as in a marriage where vows are broken, our rights guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution have been grossly violated by a government instituted to protect them. These constitutional violations have increased independent of whether there's been a Democrat-controlled Washington or a Republican-controlled Washington.

Clearly America has reached this described impasse but is his divorce idea the answer? Divorce is no easy path, as if America could peacefully divide up and go in different directions. It sounds great, especially for those of us who are weary of this onslaught from the Left, but these socialists need OUR largesse in order for their utopian America to work. There is no tidy geographical separation either so any divide will mean forced loss and forced relocation for many. No, as appealing as this sounds right now, the easy peasy divorce solution will never come to pass.
We've definitely polarized into two sides though. One side wants this all-powerful Big Brother government to take over everyone's lives, including a cultural revolution, and the other side is happy with limited government and no cultural intrusion.
Obama certainly typifies the big government side of cultural re-education and redistribution of wealth. "What's yours is mine" is their rallying cry. "Spread the wealth around" as the President told Joe the plumber. They redefine any desire to be left alone as selfishness and the intrusion of government everywhere! is part of their socialist reconstruction of America and the world.
It's not going over very well with many Americans who are not buying into the new agenda and simply want to be left alone. Too often the new agenda is hostile to Christianity to enjoy the fruits of their labors and to raise their children with their own Christian values.
Christianity has always the American model. Christianity teaches to share what we have earned, the "cheerful giver" model, it's mine but I choose to give it away. Without the guiding light of Christ, a new set of guidelines for giving is taking shape. It's mine and I give it away is no longer sufficient. A new confiscation is sweeping America so a ruling class of politicians can be generous with our money. Forced generosity is no longer generosity, it is coercion in the name of being generous.
This is the new model for America, the one being promoted by the Left. Our leaders, [Obama acts more like a ruler], are teaching us to believe that what's yours should be theirs. "You didn't earn that" Non-workers now have rights and they've become a power base of significant proportion to the workers. They are a permanent dependent class laying claim to the worker's earnings. No longer do they feel any shame in seeking the hand out. Such has become the accepted way for so many! They're taught to start grabbing for all the free stuff they can get, even if this means misrepresenting the facts. Integrity is for the other guy in this quest for what's yours is mine!
I'm praying for our return to Christ and Christian values. Clearly our society and our government have crashed through the guard rail and we are now bouncing around too fast in the rough terrain.
