NATIONAL JOURNAL – The Republican Main Street Partnership has emerged as an outspoken, deep-pocketed player in pro-business GOP plans to beat back tea-party challengers next year. But the group’s new super PAC has an unexpected source for its seed money: labor unions.

The super PAC, called Defending Main Street, has not yet submitted a major donor disclosure to the Federal Election Commission. But documents filed by other groups show that two labor organizations, the International Union of Operating Engineers and the Laborers’ International Union of North America, directed a combined $400,000 to the Republican group in September and October.

Main Street says it has raised roughly $2 million total between its super PAC and an affiliated nonprofit group so far—and that means labor has supplied at least 20 percent of those funds.

For the unions, this is not a surprising move. While both labor groups direct most of their millions to Democrats, they have consistently given smaller amounts to friendly Republicans.

But the scale of these six-figure donations—$250,000 from the Operating Engineers and $150,000 from LIUNA—makes this effort distinct. Plus, the money is coming as the Main Street group has been publicly declaring its intent to crush tea-party challengers in Republican primaries, going head to head with conservative bankrollers such as the anti-tax Club for Growth.

“Hopefully, we’ll go into eight to 10 races and beat the snot out of them,” Main Street President Steven LaTourette told National Journal in October.

That puts these labor groups on the front line of the GOP’s intra-party ideological conflict, a battle where the affiliation to unions won’t be considered advantageous, to say the least.

Democrats would love to help Republicans beat the Tea Party because should they succeed in actually beating back the Tea Party, then Republicans will the only one left on the right and they will be swallowed whole by Democrats like a snake eating a rat. And it won’t be pretty and they won’t stand a chance.

The only way the Republican Party survives is through the Tea Party. That’s it.

My son and I just returned from a visit with relatives who are - shall we say - leftists of the MSNBC variety. By that I mean they are good at spouting talking points (i.e. Bush evil, Cheney evil, Palin ridiculous, all Zero criticism is racist, Ted Cruz evil, etc.), but when asked to cite specifics, they cannot respond. One might say that these folks' political knowledge is 10 miles wide, but only an inch deep.

When Sarah Palin's name came up, one relative giggled and snorted in that oh-so-familiar "you can't be serious, you like HER?" fashion. Now - in all honesty - I'm actually NOT a huge Palin fan, but I certainly don't hate her. And I do agree with much more of what she would support than not.

In any event, I asked this giggling, snorting relative which policy - exactly - that Palin supported that she would have a problem with. Name one - just one. The relative of course couldn't. The best she could come up with was "well, everything."

The topic of the "tea party" came up as well. They are, of course, (according to these relatives) evil. Yet no one could cite specifics save that "they (and Ted Cruz) caused the government shutdown."

In a vain attempt to educate - and to find SOME area of possible agreement - I presented the following - which sums up my view of the way the tea party is viewed by the ruling class:

Two of the most evil, corrupt members of the US Senate - members who are without question the epitome of the ruling class - are Harry Reid (D) and Chuck the Schmuck Shumer (D). Another bona-fide ruling class member, however, who happens to have an R after his name, is John McCain (who I affectionately refer to as McClown).

Now here's the deal: when push comes to shove, and the interests of the people might conflict with the interests of the ruling class, as represented by Reid and Schumer, who is McClown going to side with? You guessed it - his pals Reid and Schumer. NOT the people, and NOT the (so called) republican party.

The "evil" (as viewed by my relatives) tea party just happens to represent the interests OF THE PEOPLE (as opposed to the interests of the ruling class).

That is why it is so hated by those on the Left. And by the ruling class. And by the establishment (as represented by MSNBC)

Why my relatives cannot understand this - I do not know. So - did I make an impression? Probably not - as they soon after changed the topic.

Luckily for me, most of my relatives are thinkers, not feelers, so they educate me as often as I do them.

I do spend much of my internet time gently (most of the time, anyway) challenging the assumptions of those who haven't invested time in becoming knowledgeable. I don't know if it has much of an effect.
