U.S. Not Expected to Fault Officer in Ferguson Case [NYT headline] OR Justice Department won't seek civil-rights charges against Missouri officer [The Columbus Dispatch headline for same story]
WASHINGTON — Justice Department lawyers will recommend that no civil rights charges be brought against the police officer who fatally shot an unarmed teenager in Ferguson, Mo., after an F.B.I. investigation found no evidence to support charges, law enforcement officials said Wednesday.
Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr. and his civil rights chief, Vanita Gupta, will have the final say on whether the Justice Department will close the case against the officer, Darren Wilson. But it would be unusual for them to overrule the prosecutors on the case, who are still working on a legal memo explaining their recommendation.
A decision by the Justice Department would bring an end to the politically charged investigation of Mr. Wilson in the death of 18-year-old Michael Brown. The Missouri authorities concluded their investigation into Mr. Brown’s death in November and also recommended against charges.
But a broader Justice Department civil rights investigation into allegations of discriminatory traffic stops and excessive force by the Ferguson Police Department remains open. That investigation could lead to significant changes at the department, which is overwhelmingly white despite serving a city that is mostly black.
Benjamin L. Crump, a lawyer for Mr. Brown’s family, said he did not want to comment on the investigation until the Justice Department made an official announcement.
“We’ve heard speculation on cases before that didn’t turn out to be true,” Mr. Crump said. “It’s too much to put the family through to respond to every rumor.”
Mr. Wilson’s lawyer did not return calls for comment.

Stop trying to make the Ferguson protests something they weren’t. And, just as importantly, stop trying to make Michael Brown, the man shot to death during a fight with police Office Darren Wilson in August, something he wasn’t.
“If you look at the most credible evidence, the lessons are really basic ... don’t rob a convenience store. Don’t fight with a policeman when he stops you and try to take his gun. And when he yells at you to stop, just stop.”
This story was touted to be the evidence extraordinaire of racial bigotry and police brutality. The NYT would like nothing to interfere with that conclusion so the story is written to make this look like it was a close call, even though no charges will be filed.
I personally cannot believe how a three month DOJ probe into racial motivations simply ends. No more talk about it, hey? A huge error was made, resource appropriated and the President, the Attorney General President Obama, Mr. Holder and Mayor Bill de Blasio of New York, all speak out on the issue against the police. They ratified the community's misdeeds the attitude toward the police.
"Mr. Wilson told investigators that Mr. Brown had tussled with him through the window of his police car and tried to grab his gun, an account supported by bruises and DNA evidence. Two shots were fired during that struggle."
Three autopsies later and a mammoth rush to judgment is concluded by a simple report of no charges which escapes all scrutiny??? No reckless behaviors identified by these race bating Lefty politicians??? Nothing here to learn??? Really??? Is that because the victim of the witch hunt was white.
This was a travesty of justice! Justice did not prove Officer Wilson innocent. Justice proves the PTB were unsuccessful in orchestrating a racial witch hunt even though they invested unprecedented manpower and untold resources. [at least 40 agents!!!].
What happened in Ferguson cannot simply be dismissed like this with a hasty article saying "no civil rights charges will be brought against the police officer." Officer Wilson was damaged. He was forced to quit his job. Police forces all over were severely tarnished. Justice demands these wrongs be identified, addressed and punished.
