Emma González wore a Cuban flag patch on her jacket while speaking at the March for Our Lives rally in March 2018.
RATING
TRUE
An image of the Parkland school shooting attack survivor attempts to cast her as a "communist" for paying respect to her father's heritage.
González, who has been at the forefront of a new wave of gun safety activism spurred by the shooting attack at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School that left seventeen people dead on 14 February 2018, has not ever identified as a “communist” nor expressed an affinity for the regime of the Castro brothers. However, she has been open about her Cuban heritage, stating in an op-ed piece she penned for Harper’s Bazaar magazine that: I’m 18 years old, Cuban and bisexual. I’m so indecisive that I can’t pick a favorite color, and I’m allergic to 12 things. I draw, paint, crochet, sew, embroider—anything productive I can do with my hands while watching Netflix.
But none of this matters anymore.
What matters is that the majority of American people have become complacent in a senseless injustice that occurs all around them.
González was not born in Cuba, but her father is a native-born Cuban who immigrated from that island country to New York City in 1968 and now works in the U.S. as an attorney for a cybersecurity company.
González had rejected the notion that she wants to “disarm” every American, stating that “At the end of the day, we don’t want people to have their guns taken away. We just want the people to be more responsible. We want civilians to have to go through more rolls of red tape to get what they want, because if any of that tape can stop those who shouldn’t own a gun from owning a gun, then our government will have done something right.”
Other memes have also falsely presented González as having ripped up a copy of the U.S. Constitution. Leslie Gibson, a Republican candidate for Maine’s state House, derisively called her a “skinhead lesbian” before abandoning his candidacy amidst backlash over his remarks.
The attacks against González fall in line with efforts by far-right blogs to paint another shooting survivor, David Hogg, as a pawn of the “deep state.”

Palm Sunday in Cuba: Dozens of Women Beaten, Arrested for Practicing Christianity
by Frances Martel, 27 Mar 2018286
The Cuban dissident group Ladies in White reports that at least 36 of their members were arrested violently this weekend while participating in pro-democracy protests and attempting to attend Catholic Mass on Palm Sunday.
The Ladies in White are a group consisting of the mothers, daughters, sisters, and wives of political prisoners. They protest the communist regime’s violent repression of speech and religion every Sunday by attempting to attend Mass wearing white and holding gladiolas, often carrying photos of their imprisoned loved ones.
The Havana wing of the group has not been able to attend Mass at their Santa Rita church for 140 Sundays, according to the Cuban-American outlet Babalú Blog. Next week, they will mark two years of being banned from their own church. The Catholic Church largely cooperates with the Cuban Castro regime, despite the latter being nominally atheist and forcing the church to disregard gross human rights abuses. In exchange, with the exception of the Ladies in White, the Cuban regime tends to crack down harder on Evangelical and other non-Catholic Christian denominations.
The most prominent Christian political prisoner on the island is arguably Eduardo Cardet, the head of the dissident Christian Liberation Movement. Cardet has been in prison for a year and four months out of a three-year sentence for not having signed a condolence book following the death of dictator Fidel Castro. His family has demanded medical care for his severe asthma, which has worsened following assaults behind bars.
snip The regime often arrests the women without charge and releases them within days. Less commonly, the dissidents will be charged with “disrespect” against the state, a serious crime in Cuba. This Sunday, one Lady in White, Asunción Carrillo, and her son, former political prisoner Iván Hernández Carrillo, received charges of “disrespect,” according to Diario de Cuba. The two shouted slogans such as “freedom for political prisoners” and “down with the regime” while being beaten and arrested, according to the report, and received a 2,000-peso fine for “disrespect.”
The Cuban regime conducted 347 arbitrary arrests in February, many involving the same group of Ladies in White protesters, according to the NGO Cuban Commission for Human Rights and National Reconciliation (CCDHRN). The number, according to the group, is the highest it has been since October 2017. In addition to those routinely arrested in the short term, the group has identified over one hundred political prisoners facing extended sentences on the island.
