CNN White House correspondent Jim Acosta fired back at President Trump Sunday over a doctored video he posted of himself pummeling the network, with Acosta saying, “We have to stand up to this.”
“There are two approaches to this. One is, we can sit back and be silent and just take it,” Acosta said on CNN on Sunday. “I think we’re well past that now.”
“I think we’re at the stage where we have to try the other approach, which is: we have to stand up to this. We have to confront this and say that it’s wrong.”
Acosta said he’s concerned that Trump’s tweets and continual attacks on the press will lead to violence against a member of the news media. “My concern is that this kind of rhetoric, this kind of behavior is going to lead to a journalist being hurt,” he said.
Acosta’s comments came after Trump tweeted a video Sunday morning that depicted the president attacking a person with the CNN logo superimposed over their head.
The video Trump tweeted is from WrestleMania 23 in 2007, when Trump competed versus WWE head Vince McMahon during a staged "battle of the billionaires" fight where each chose one wrestler to represent them.
CNN quickly fired back at Trump’s tweet in a statement Sunday morning.
“We will keep doing our jobs. He should start doing his,” the statement read.
Trump’s tweet quickly drew widespread criticism from journalists, many of whom took to Twitter to express their support for CNN.
