Sen. Joni Ernst (R-Iowa) said on Tuesday that President Trump's frequent trips to his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida bother not only her, but other members of the Republican caucus.
"I do wish he would spend more time in Washington, D.C.," Ernst said during a town hall meeting. "That's what we have the White House for."
Since he took office, Trump has spent seven out of the last 13 weekends at his self-described "winter White House" in Palm Beach. The visits have stirred controversy, in part because of the enormous costs associated with such frequent travel.
One estimate of the weekend trips by CNN placed the cost so far above $20 million, putting Trump on track to spend more on travel in his first year in office than former President Obama spent in eight years.
Before becoming president, Trump frequently assailed Obama for his excessive travel and vacations, arguing that the then-president should stay in Washington to work rather than play golf on the weekends. "I think that has been bothering not just me but some other members of our caucus," Ernst said of Trump's Mar-a-Lago trips.
Trump has conducted some of the most important business of his presidency at the Florida resort. Earlier this month, the president ordered from Mar-a-Lago a missile strike on a Syrian airfield, a move that dramatically escalated the United States's use of force in the embattled country.
He has also hosted foreign leaders at Mar-a-Lago, including Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and, more recently, Chinese President Xi Jinping.
What the hell is wrong with these people? Comparing Obama's gay golfing to Trump's hosting foreign dignitaries is what's wrong with that damn DC Swamp!!! Get your head out of your arse Joni !
As Trump is entertaining China's president, getting him to refuse Nork's coal, You're whining about the cost of world diplomacy. We have the Dems to provide us with these lame analogies and false comparisons. Dang!!! Trump is trying to save America. A comparison might be John Skerry's 12 USELESS trips to Davos?
Will y'all just stand back and LET HIM DO IT? TM rant.
This from Politico:
"A White House aide said Trump plans to use the golf course while in office to forge more personal connections with other foreign dignitaries, as well as industry officials and members of Congress. The president hinted as much last Sunday when he detailed his planned golfing round with the Japanese leader, who he’ll partner with rather than competing against. “That’s the one thing about golf—you get to know somebody better on a golf course than you will over lunch,” Trump told Westwood One Sports Radio."
"The demographic most opposed to President Trump is not a racial minority, but a cultural elite." Daniel Greenberg
"Failure to adequately denounce Islamic extremism, not only denies the existence of an absolute moral wrong but inherently diminishes our chances of defeating it." Tulsi Gabbard
"It’s a movement comprised of Americans from all races, religions, backgrounds and beliefs, who want and expect our government to serve the people, and serve the people it will." Donald Trump's Victory Speech 11/9/16
