Comedian Jon Stewart joined “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” Monday night to mock the media’s obsession with President Trump.
The former “Daily Show” host popped out from underneath Mr. Colbert’s desk on to deliver a monologue comparing the media to a scorned lover. “Hey media, so I heard Donald Trump broke up with you,” Mr. Stewart said. “Stings a little doesn’t it? You finally thought you’d met your match: a blabbermouth who’s as thin-skinned and narcissistic as you are.
“Well, now it’s over. Well, good riddance I say! Kick him to the curb,” he continued. “It is time for you to get your groove back media, ‘cause let’s face facts, you kind of let yourself go a little bit for these past few years. Put on a few pundits, obsessing 24 hours a day, seven days a week about this one guy. ‘What’s Donny up to? Did he say anything about us? You think he’s gonna come on our show? Do you think even like us?’ … And the whole time you’re chasing after Donny, the rest of us are thinking, ‘Can’t you see he’s an ass—?’”
Mr. Stewart said it’s time for the media to “stop whining” about their treatment from the Trump administration. “This break up with Donald Trump has given you, the media, an amazing opportunity for self-reflection and improvement,” he said. “Instead of worrying about whether Trump is un-American or if he thinks you’re the enemy or if he’s being mean to you or if he’s gonna let you go back into the briefings, do something for yourself.
“Take up a hobby,” he added. “I recommend journalism.”
Mr. Stewart’s comments came three days after CNN, The New York Times, Politico and the Los Angeles Times were prevented from attending a non-televised briefing on Friday. Mr. Trump has repeatedly stated that the mainstream media, or what he calls “fake news,” are the enemy of the people. Several journalists, including CNN’s Jake Tapper and NBC’s Chuck Todd, have called the president’s so-called war on the media “un-American.”
