The star of the only reality show too sleazy for A&E (they ordered a whole season, showed two episodes and ran out the rest early on a Sunday morning), former Louisiana governor Democrat Edwin Edwards, who was jailed on racketeering, extortion, money laundering and mail fraud charges after it was discovered that Edwards and for-profit prison entrepreneur Patrick Graham had collaborated on a scheme to locate a juvenile detention facility in La Salle Parish (profiting Graham) for a mere $845,000 bribe (profiting Edwards). Edwards was only recently released on parole, but it seems that still makes him the best possible Democratic candidate to run for the open 6th District seat.
I acknowledge there are good reasons I should not run. But there are better reasons why I should,” Edwards said.
The 86-year-old Silver Fox, known for his memorable, often shocking quotesand the nearly nine years spent behind bars on extortion, fraud and racketeering charges, made the announcement at a meeting of the Press Club of Baton Rouge on Monday (March 17).
Edwards said the decision was not an easy one, but he ended up where he was “because I feel, I feel, that I can accomplish something if not immediately then in the long-run to help make my country a better country and properly address the needs of the 6th District.”
The Marksville native and arguably Louisiana’s most famous Cajun told the assembled press and public Monday that he hopes to serve on the public works and agriculture committees in Congress to work on oil and gas industry and infrastructure issues.
At 86 years old, this is probably Edwards’ last chance at a comeback, particularly with the failure of his reality television series, orchestrated by his wife Trina, who is significantly younger and more annoying than he. Unfortunately, at 86, he’s already fallen behind the curve as far as campaign technology, and he has yet to launch a website or any kind of web presence for his campaign. But this is also a district where he was the most obvious choice of candidate, so he may not actually need to.
Who cares. This has been a solid right district for decades and was gerrymandered even safer in '11. If this crook wins the nomination, it will just make it that much easier for the GOP to hold on to this seat.
