A suspect in a bank robbery used a ride-booking service to try to make his getaway Monday evening, police said.
He was arrested about two miles away, the Patriot Ledger reported.
Luis E. Mallett, 29, of 116 Burkhall St., #R, Weymouth, was charged by Weymouth police with unarmed robbery and making a false report relative to the location of an explosive device.
He was held at the Weymouth police station without bail overnight for a scheduled arraignment in Quincy District Court Tuesday.
Weymouth police Lt. John Perchard said that at about 5 p.m. Monday, officers responded to the Santander Bank at 51 Pleasant St. after getting a report of a robbery.
He said the suspect, later identified as Mallett, “passed a note demanding money and indicating he had a bomb.”
The suspect then fled the bank on foot.
An off-duty police officer who had been in the area spoke with a witness who provided information about Mallett entering an Uber vehicle heading to Brockton, Perchard said. A Weymouth police dog also tracked directly from the bank to the spot where the suspect entered the Uber vehicle, a red Nissan Altima.
Officers in the area located the car on Main Street near the 99 restaurant. They approached the vehicle while it was stopped in traffic at the intersection of Main and Pond streets.
Perchard said Mallett was in the rear passenger seat of the Nissan. He was in possession of more than $700 in cash, which is consistent with the money that had been stolen from the bank, police said.
Mallett also had seven default and straight warrants for five counts of larceny over $250, one of larceny under $250, larceny of a motor vehicle, uttering and receiving stolen property, Perchard said.
He said the Uber driver was not involved in the robbery and will not face charges.
******* "Maybe God is trying to tell us something important- that now is not the time for a “nice Christian guy” or a “gentleman” or a typical Republican powder puff. Maybe now is the time for a natural born killer, a ruthless fighter, a warrior. Because right about now we need a miracle, or America is finished. Maybe the rules of gentleman don’t apply here. Maybe a gentleman and “all-around nice Christian” would lead us to slaughter." Wayne Allyn Root
