Dozens of people suffer burns after walking across hot coals at Texas motivational speaker event [Tony Robbins]
Dozens of people have suffered burns to their feet after walking across hot coals during a programme by an American motivational speaker.
Those injured were attendees at a three-and-a-half-day event, called “Unleash the Power Within” by Tony Robbins who advises people on self-improvement.
One of the techniques, ABC News reported, was to overcome unconscious fears which were holding them back by storming across a bed of hot coals.
“Once you start doing what you thought was impossible, you’ll conquer the other fires of your life with ease," Mr Robbins told attendees on his website.
According to one of the attendees, some of the participants storming across the coals tried to take “selfies” at the same time.
Between 30 and 40 people required treatment for minor burns said Jason Evans, a spokesman for Dallas Fire Rescue. At least five people were taken to hospital.
"Apparently, as part of a motivational event being held at the location, several people attempted to walk across hot coals. As a result, a large number of these people sustained burn injuries to their feet and lower extremities," Mr Evans said.
A spokesman for Mr Robbins said 7,000 people completed the firewalk in Dallas without mishap, although it was not uncommon for up to one percent to suffer some discomfort similar to sunburn.
"Someone unfamiliar with the process of the fire walk called 911 reporting the need for emergency services vehicles to be dispatched.
“While there was no need for emergency personnel we are grateful to the quick and robust response from Dallas emergency services, only five of 7,000 participants requested any examination beyond what was readily available on site.”
