Schilling has been in trouble with ESPN before for his public pronouncements. Now, in the name of tolerance, he's been fired for them.
ZitatBRISTOL, Conn. — ESPN announced that it has fired network analyst and former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling following his comments on Facebook about transgender people.
In a statement released Wednesday, ESPN said "Curt Schilling has been advised that his conduct was unacceptable and his employment with ESPN has been terminated."
This week, Schilling reposted an image of an overweight man wearing a long blond wig and revealing women's clothing. It included the phrase: "Let him in! To the restroom with your daughter or else you're a narrow minded, judgmental, unloving, racist bigot who needs to die!!!"
Schilling added his own comments, saying, "A man is a man no matter what they call themselves" and "Now you need laws telling us differently? Pathetic."
Schilling was apparently referring to laws in several states that restrict bathroom access to transgender people.
Earlier Wednesday, Schilling defended the post on his blog, saying he was expressing his opinion and those criticizing him are frauds.
Those who criticized him and those responsible for his dismissal are frauds. Tolerance is a 2 way street.
I have to admit I find the 2016 election season disgusting and no one emerges unsullied on either side. I have no idea for whom I will vote, nor even if I will.
Schilling has received some awful lumps since '04. He's one tough guy, a fighter, and his wife and family are by his side. I like his style!
******* “We cannot continue to allow ourselves to be influenced and molded by the political class and by the media. That is going to destroy us," he said, remarking that it's "kind of sad" that the press is the only business protected by the Constitution "because they were supposed to be the allies of the people." He wrote a op-ed right after 9/11. I liked him from that moment on. Was not a bit surprised they fired him He had to have known he was going to get the hook.
ZitatA week after he was fired as an analyst from ESPN, former major league pitcher Curt Schilling is firing a brushback pitch at the network, claiming he was unfairly targeted for his conservative beliefs.

Schilling, a Hall of Fame contender after a brilliant career during which he won three World Series, was sacked by the “Worldwide Leader in Sports” after he posted a meme on Facebook protesting recent laws allowing transgendered people to use whichever bathroom they wish. ESPN claimed Schilling’s post violated a company policy prohibiting analysts from discussing politics.
“It was apparent to me early on that if you wanted to go off topic as a sports person, you had to go off topic left, or you were going to get in trouble,” Schilling said during a radio appearance on SiriusXM’s “Breitbart News Patriot Forum.” “Some of the most racist things I’ve ever heard have come out of people that are on the air at ESPN. They’re some of the biggest racists in sports commentating.”
He went on to say, “The memo that went out to everybody went out to all of us the same, which is: If you are a sport person stick to sports, don’t get involved in the political arena.
“In the end for me it felt like that rule applied to me and me alone because I was conservative…Bigots are calling me a bigot. A bigot is someone who refuses to accept a different opinion. I will accept anyone’s opinion.”
Asked later by Newsday to clarify his comments, Schilling pointed to several fellow commentators who’ve voiced controversial sentiments yet received little or no discipline.
“You listen to Stephen A. Smith, and Stephen A. Smith was the guy who said that Robert Griffin didn’t play quarterback for the Redskins because he’s black,” Schilling said. “No, Robert Griffin didn’t play quarterback for the Redskins because he [stunk].
“…Tony Kornheiser compared the Tea Party to ISIS. I don’t know any planet where those are sports topics. But I don’t care. It’s OK. I think those conversations need to happen. But as soon as you go to the flip side, the right side, there are repercussions for not talking about sports.”
The transgender post was not Schilling’s first encounter with ESPN brass. He was suspended last year for posting another Facebook meme, this one comparing the number of Muslim extremists to the number of Nazis in Germany during Adolph Hitler’s reign.
