WORCESTER – Added patrols, motorcycle officers and undercover officers from Worcester Police will be part of the security detail for Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump's event at the DCU Center Wednesday.
The exact number of U.S. Secret Service agents, Massachusetts State Police and Worcester Police assigned to the event could not be disclosed because of security reasons.
Security for the event won't be on the same scale as last year when President Barack Obama attended the Worcester Technical High School's graduation at the DCU Center. Obama's visit caused road closures for the motorcade.
There will not be any road closures for Trump's motorcade, Gemme said. Trump is landing at Worcester Regional Airport and will have law enforcement from different agencies escort his vehicle to the DCU Center.
"It will be a low key entry and exit from the Worcester Regional Airport and the DCU Center," Gemme said.
The chief said he believes there will be minimal disruption to local traffic and pedestrian traffic.
The preliminary security plan, which can be adjusted as needed, has taken the recent events in Paris and the theft of weapons from the Lincoln Stoddard U.S. Army Reserve Center into consideration, the chief said.
"We are certainly aware of the break-in at the armory and the resources we are allocating for the Trump event will ensure public safety around the event and for the community as a whole."
Worcester Police do not have any independent information of possible threats in the Worcester community in connection to the theft of 16 weapons from the armory, Gemme said.
His department is relying on information from the FBI, the state's Fusion Center and the Worcester Police Officer assigned full-time to the FBI in that investigation.
Along with Massachusetts State Police dogs, the Worcester Police's explosives detection dog and patrol dog will be at the DCU Center. The Worcester Police's Real Time Crime Center will also be operational during the day. Officers will monitor social media as part of the security plan.
The majority of the cost for adding Worcester Police resources for the Trump event will be paid for by Trump's campaign or the DCU Center, Gemme said. He estimated that cost to be around $15,000 to $25,000.
Your ThirstyMan will be The Front Porch's, 'Man-on-the-Scene' to hear The Donald speak tonight! [reminds me of my days as a FReeper] Notice how the story is about security, not policy. Probably this is an attempt to keep people away. There are also people "pranking" the event. What does that mean? Well since the tickets are free, these lefties have figured there's no penalty for ordering tickets with no intention of showing up. One girl bragged she had 40 tickets. Trump's people must know about this pranking because even as the event tonight was listed as "Sold Out" I was able to get a ticket at 7:30 last night. Doors open at 5 for the 7:00pm event. I plan to get there early. TM ***********
People are pranking Trump by RSVPing to his Worcester rally with no plans to show Will there be a yuuuge amount of empty seats on Wednesday?
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has an event scheduled at Worcester’s DCU Center for Wednesday night. The event is already sold out, but may not necessarily be packed with Trump supporters.
The event is free, but required a registration via Eventbrite. Shortly after registration opened, a hashtag began to circulate among Trump opposers to #PrankTrump. The prank? Register for the event, and simply not attend.
I noticed two interesting things that demonstrate respect for the people of Worcester:
ZitatSecurity for the event won't be on the same scale as last year when President Barack Obama attended the Worcester Technical High School's graduation at the DCU Center. Obama's visit caused road closures for the motorcade.
