As the oldest serving Infantry Regiment in the United States Army, the 3rd United States Infantry has earned the title “The Old Guard.”
Today, they serve as a ceremonial unit in Washington, DC.
But the soldiers assigned are just that, soldiers. Infantrymen, with the same training as any troop assigned to any other Infantry unit. It’s just that when they are assigned to The Old Guard, they focus their training differently. Mind you, after a tour with the regiment, virtually all go on to tours in normal units. And as such, they must maintain their qualifications and professional skills in the actual Infantry duties.
