Kudos to President Obama for giving his wife a birthday present we all can envy, indeed covet. CBS News reports:
President Barack Obama is going to give his wife the birthday present that many parents can only dream of - time off, alone, without the children.
The White House said on Saturday first lady Michelle Obama would stay in Hawaii, where the family has been on vacation for the last two weeks, rather than return home with her husband and their two girls.
"As part of her birthday gift from the president, the first lady will remain in Hawaii to spend time with friends ahead of her upcoming 50th birthday," a White House official said.
Just imagine for a moment if President Obama would agree to leave the rest of us alone. How wonderful would that be? He does have it within his power to make the gift to Americans permanent, too. Rumor has it that either his presidential library or presidential foundationup in Honolulu, so an early retirement to the balmy shores of Oahu would be a great gift to Americans, indeed to all humanity. How about it, Barack? Maybe on our birthday, the Fourth of July, you could bestow this gift.

The decision by First Lady Michelle Obama to leave on schedule for her two-week Hawaii vacation and not wait a few days for her delayed husband will probably cost taxpayers more than $63,000 – and possibly well in excess of $100,000 – in additional expenses, according to a White House Dossier analysis.
President Obama was supposed to depart for Hawaii Saturday, but decided to stay in Washington until Congress finishes its work for the year. He departs this evening. But Mrs. Obama chose to leave without him Saturday, taking their two children and the dog along with her. [...]
Mrs. Obama jetted out to Hawaii on an Air Force C-40B Special Mission Aircraft. The Defense Department bills other agencies $6,330 per flight hour for use the plane.
Assuming a flight time from Washington DC to Hawaii of about ten hours, the cost to taxpayers for the flight alone would be about $63,000.
