By now it’s risen to the level of love fest. The GOP establishment is positively giddy about the prospect of a Chris Christie presidential candidacy in 2016, as evidenced by its support for Christie in last month’s gubernatorial reelection bid.
To longtime political conservatives, this comes as no surprise. Christie, if he wins the nomination, would merely be the latest in a long and undistinguished line of big government neocon presidential contenders and pretenders who are just as comfortable with their place among the ruling class as “rival” Democrats. The only difference is, they seek to run Big Government their way.
Well, alright then. If Christie is our Republican destiny, let’s take a closer look at why the Establishment thinks so. For that, let’s turn to Chris Cillizza of The Washington Post. He says the reason why the Establishment GOP adores Christie can be summed up in a speech the New Jersey governor gave in Union City the day after he won his reelection:
I'm not worried about Christie doing anything in the Primaries. First off, he can't self finance unlimitedly like dopey Romney did to eliminate challengers. The GOP isn't raising the money they did before and I don;t see too many people getting excited about this fat ass. Secondly, there are so many holes in Christies narrative that he won;t be able to make through the debates. If anyone watched any of the Buono/Christie Gov debates, he sucked and had a real hard time confidently defending himself. He is going to be Gov Perry X10 in any Primary debate.
